A Qualitative Study of Changes and Developments in Special Education for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: From the Experience of Special Education Teachers

Abstract
In the past 30 years, there have been many changes and developments in the field of special education, and among them, the special education for ASD has made remarkable changes and developments. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in special education for students with ASD over the past 30 years and to explore the future direction of education for students with ASD based on this. Focus group interviews were conducted with 7 special education teachers who worked at special education schools where students with ASD were the main members of the school. As a result of analyzing the data collected through the interview, 6 core themes and 19 sub-themes were derived. The main themes were 1) the establishment of a special education school for students with ASD, 2) change in perception of ASD and development of educational support system, 3) from the philosophy of deficiency to education based on the philosophy of diversity, 4) developing into a variety of career choices for students after graduation, 5) networked and empowered parents and families, and 6) the future of education for students of ASD. Based on the results of the study, the future and developments in the special education for students with ASD were discussed.
